Gubernatorial Debate in San Bernardino on May 19, 2026

<h3>More than 75% of California households depend on two or more adult earners. Our Californian population is aging. Maximizing existing residential areas is California's future.</h3><h3>This summer, I am building a single-family residence over my home and an apartment over my garage. This will allow some of my children and/or my mother to live independently under the same roof, with a 10+ kWh solar system, which will provide power for the entire household.</h3>

Maximizing our cities will enable AFFORDABLE HOUSING without losing farmland. Building upon existing structures, utilizing existing infrastructure, and employing smart design will protect Californians' properties from climate and natural disasters and make construction cheaper and faster. Single-family dwellings will look different today than those built 70 years ago, as California has become the most populous state.10+ kWh solar systems on every new roof will completely power California homes, plus EV charging. Home down-payment assistance for lower- and middle-income Californians and lower interest rates for all Californians will be a high priority for my administration.

Abolishment or suspension of California's Gas Tax has been a hot topic for California's Gubernatorial Candidates this spring. Unfortunately, we need this fund for transportation infrastructure. I will streamline this budget to fund more public transportation and dedicated bike lanes throughout California without increasing it. I would consider suspending California's Gas Tax for six months while exploring clean refining technologies in California.Since 2018, California's cannabis sales and excise taxes have generated over $7.3 billion in revenue. Averaging close to $1 billion annually.Alcohol taxes have remained unchanged since 1991 and generated only $415,007,000 in revenue from the 2024-2025 fiscal year. This is a luxury item that I propose taxing similarly to cannabis products to help fund California's schools, mental health, and healthcare.

California is a global economic power. Over 19 million Californians work. More Californians work in professional services compared to the rest of the U.S. Our workforce, like our population, is aging. Plans to support middle- and lower-wage earners and older workers will be a top priority to offset federal cuts to Social Security and health care. Federal cutbacks to our essential services, such as schools, Social Security, and Medicare, will require California to step up and provide equitable services for Californians.I believe food equity is a human right in bountiful California. No Californian should experience food insecurity or hunger. All public school students will be entitled to two NUTRITIOUS meals each school day. School garden harvests can supplement families' groceries.

Being unhoused is a multifaceted issue in California. It looks different for many Californians. We have areas that experience developing or even third-world conditions, such as some farm worker housing and some of our Native Californian reservations. Some families live in their vehicles. Many Californians live paycheck to paycheck. I have spoken to my unhoused patients. One man who had a family with a home, but chose to live in the camp, told me, “It's just easier.” I know that people form family units living on the street or in camps. The first steps to tackle this multilayered issue under my administration are by facilitating access to mental health and health care for all, funded by an increase in the alcohol tax. Since the 1980s, about 30% of the unhoused population has suffered from mental health issues. This is the fastest intervention that can help up to 30% of the unhoused population rapidly. I would facilitate field teams of health &amp; mental health providers visiting homeless camps to provide services to those who would like them.The next steps are to make housing more affordable and to provide more affordable living in California.
